Gandhiji, following Chauri Chaura (U.P.) tragedy in which 22 police constables and one sub-inspector were burnt to death by a mob, fasts for five days and abandons plan of satyagraha movement.

4/4/1904Kundan Lal Saigal, golden voiced singer, legend in his lifetime, actor and film maker, was born in Jammu. Some of his famous songs are ""Ek Bangla Bane Nayara"", ""Diya Jalao"", ""Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya"".
4/26/1858Kunwar Singh, revolutionary of Indian mutiny and freedom fighter, passed away. He fought his last battle near Jagdishpur, Bihar on April 23, 1858 and defeated the Britishers but was deeply wounded. He also organised the national rebels.
2/26/1874Sursingh Takhtsingh Gohil `Kalapi', famous Gujrati poet, was born.
8/30/1979Earl Louis Mountbatten of Burma, a World War II hero, last British Viceroy in India and the first Governor General of independent India, was killed when Irish terrorists exploded his family fishing boat off the coast of Ireland. The Provisional wing of the Irish Republican Army immediately took credit for the killing, which it described as 'an execution' designed to further 'the noble struggle to drive the British intruders out of our native land'.
